What: "I have this belief that in the sand, the sandbars, and the seafloor, there is a message there," says McNinch, director of the facility. "Geology is like the ocean's court stenographer. It is not exactly obvious how it is recorded. In that sense, it's like hieroglyphics, and we only have part of the Rosetta stone. We know a little bit about how to interpret the shapes of the seafloor, but it is a constant mystery."
